EXCERPT Coda: Defense of the Republic from THE RADICAL MIND: The Destructive Plans of the Woke Left by David Horowitz The present battle for America’s soul will take generations to resolve. It is a battle that pits America’s defenders - believers in ordered liberty - against believers in the unlimited power and authority of the state. In the conflicts that ensue, the two institutions that will lead the defense of America’s constitutional order are the American family, and members – or respecters – of Judeo-Christian religions. Already the revolt against the progressive assault in the schools is being led by parents outraged by the efforts of teacher unions to come between them and their children, to enlist the defenseless innocent in racist attacks on their country and its freedoms, and to inflict on them life-altering drugs and ungrounded attitudes about “gender fluidity” and transgenderism, as part of their plan to “change the world.” The family, for better or worse, is the shaper of values and the first defender of individual freedoms against the intrusions of the state. The health of society rises and falls with the health and strength of the family and its bonds. A decent society will be one that defends families against the intrusion of outside forces, ideological and governmental which seek to capture its children to serve their destructive agendas. The second institutional pillar of the nation’s defense is religion – specifically the principles embraced, and the communities formed by members of Judeo-Christian religions. One doesn’t have to be a believer in divine origins, or trust in a divine destiny, to appreciate the fact that America’s constitutional order was the creation of believing Christians, whose vision was shaped by the doctrines of the Protestant Reformation. American freedoms and America’s revolutionary ideal of equality can all be traced to the Christian values associated with Martin Luther and his disciples. Thomas Jefferson did not believe in the divinity of Christ, but he did rely on his biblical faith and what it taught him about human nature and human behavior, which led him to champion these values. Every freedom enjoyed by Americans is a gift of the faith that they were bestowed not by a government of men, but by a divinity. Therefore there is no human authority that can take them away. They are unalienable. Radicals hate the religious community because religious communities are based on allegiance to a higher power and moral authority than the political state. They are the defenders of the private sphere, of the freedom of conscience and its expression, which is the basis of all the freedoms we have. The hour is late and the forces of darkness are upon us. To save our freedoms, Americans must renew their faith in their country, relearn its history, re-acquaint themselves with the wisdom of the founders, and reject the siren songs of the envious, the resentful and the haters of human diversity with malice in their hearts.
