Spezialschule

Idyllisch, beschleunigungsresistent und weltentlegen: solche Zuschreibungen haften der „Spezialschule für Bildhauerei“ im Prater seit ihrer Gründung 1913 an – und halten sich bis heute. Das zweisprachige Buch nähert sich der Geschichte der anfangs nur als Provisorium konzipierten „Bildhauerburg“ der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien in Textbeiträgen zu diversen Themen und Ereignissen aus dem Gründungsjahr des Gebäudes. Bearbeitet werden unter anderem die konfliktreiche Planungs- und Umzugsphase, der Arbeitsalltag der Dienerschaft, die Ablehnung von Frauen zum Studium, die koloniale Verstricktheit der angrenzenden Weltausstellung im Prater und der Studienalltag der ersten Jahre: „Vormittags modellieren, nachmittags meisseln!“ Das Buch erscheint zur Ausstellung „Spezialschule für Bildhauerei“ vom 18. Oktober bis 14. Dezember 2019 im xE – Ausstellungsraum der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien. Descriptors such as idyllic, resistant to acceleration and remote have been attributed to the “Specialist School of Sculpture” in the Prater since it was established in 1913—and continue to this day. This publication is dedicated to the history of the “sculptors’ castle” of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, which was initially conceived as just a provisional solution. The authors cover various subjects and events from the institution’s founding year. Topics include the conflictual period of planning, relocation and construction, the everyday work of the servants, the denial of admission for female students, the colonial interweaving of the adjoining Prater and the daily routine of students in the first years: “Modeling clay in the morning, chiseling stone in the afternoon!” The book is published in conjunction with the exhibition “Specialist School of Sculpture” at xE – Ausstellungsraum der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, on view from October 18 through December 18, 2019.
