Kaum ein Künstler hat das Spanienbild, das man sich um 1900 im Ausland machte, so sehr geprägt wie Ignacio Zuloaga (1870–1945): stolze Toreros und temperamentvolle Flamenco-Tänzerinnen; das einfache Leben der Landbevölkerung, Asketen und Büßer in weiten, kargen Landschaften; Bettler, Kleinwüchsige und Hexen, die das Erbe von Altmeistern wie Diego Velázquez und Francisco de Goya aufrufen. In Zeiten massiver Industrialisierung und der zunehmenden Orientierung Spaniens an der europäischen Moderne wollte Zuloaga mit solchen Szenen die „spanische Seele" bewahren. Zu Lebzeiten des Künstlers wurde seine Malerei international gefeiert. Der Band ist die erste umfassende monografische Publikation zum Künstler in deutscher Sprache. In times of massive industrialisation and Spain’s increasing orientation towards European modernism, Zuloaga aimed to preserve the “Spanish soul” with such scenes.
