Franz Schubert - Streichquartett d-moll D 810 (Der Tod und das Mädchen)

Franz Schubert composed the song “Death and the Maiden” in 1817, and in 1824 used that melody in the theme-and-variations second movement of his String Quartet in d minor D. 810. The song’s popularity in the second half of the 19th century was responsible for the string quartet becoming known by the title “Death and the Maiden”. Like all of Schubert’s mature chamber music works, it captivates with its technical perfection and high intellectual demands. Very prominent here is Schubert’s desire to motivically link the movements together. Oddly enough, the work was neither performed nor published during his lifetime; the incomplete autograph score and the posthumous first edition of 1831 have thus served as the sources for our edition. En 1824, il en réutilisa la mélodie pour en faire le thème du 2e mouvement de son quatuor à cordes en ré mineur D 810 et de ses variations. La popularité du lied au cours de la seconde moitié du 19e siècle contribua à faire connaître ce quatuor sous le nom de «Quatuor de la jeune fille et la mort». Comme toutes les œuvres de musique de chambre de la maturité de Schubert, ce dernier frappe par sa perfection technique et sa grande exigence intellectuelle. La volonté de Schubert de relier entre eux les motifs des différents mouvements est ici parfaitement aboutie. Étrangement, l’œuvre ne fut ni donnée en public ni éditée de son vivant. Ainsi notre édition repose-t-elle sur la partition autographe inachevée ainsi que sur la première édition posthume de 1831. Die Popularität des Liedes in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts trug dazu bei, dass das Streichquartett unter dem Titel „Der Tod und das Mädchen“ bekannt wurde. Wie alle reifen Kammermusikwerke Schuberts besticht es durch seine technische Perfektion und den hohen geistigen Anspruch. Vollendet ausgeprägt ist in diesem Werk Schuberts Anliegen, alle Sätze motivisch miteinander zu verknüpfen. Zu seinen Lebzeiten wurde das Werk seltsamerweise weder öffentlich aufgeführt noch gedruckt. So dienten unserer Ausgabe die unvollständige, autographe Partitur sowie der postume Erstdruck von 1831 als Quellen.
