Designed in an austere but traditional style by Margit Bardy, it conveys Beethoven's theme – the triumph of love and freedom over the forces of evil and oppression – with a natural, unadorned simplicity. Eine ehrliche Inszenierung, hervorragend besetzt und feinfühlig geleitet von Christoph Dohnányi - so urteilte einhellig die Londoner Presse. Dabei wurden besonders die sängerischen wie künstlerischen Leistungen von Gabriela Benacková als Leonore und Josef Protschka als Florestan in den Vordergrund gestellt, denen diejenigen der weiteren Interpreten jedoch in nichts nachstanden.
