Scars are the final result of the four processes that constitute cutaneous wound healing. Permanent scars are produced if the wounds reach the reticular dermis. If the inflammation phase is prolonged and/or more potent for some reason, inflammatory/pathological scars such as keloids or hypertrophic scars can arise. If these pathological scars are located on joints or mobile regions, scar contractures can develop. Prof. Rei Ogawa, MD, PhD, is a faculty member at Nippon Medical School in Tokyo, Japan, where he serves as Professor and Chief of the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery. His clinical expertise lies in reconstructive surgery and scar management, including the prevention and treatment of abnormal scars. He is a globally recognized expert on keloids. Prof. Ogawa currently directs the Mechanobiology and Mechanotherapy Laboratory at Nippon Medical School. His recent research focuses on mechanobiology and its applications in tissue engineering, wound healing, and anti-aging medicine. Prof. Ogawa has coauthored 50+ book chapters, published 800+ peer-reviewed papers in journals, and presented 2800+ coauthored papers at conferences, including 440+ invited lectures.Prof. Dennis P. Orgill, MD, PhD, is Associate Chief in Plastic Surgery, Harvard Medical School, and Full Professor at Harvard Medical School, Department of Plastic Surgery, and Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He specializes in adult reconstructive surgical procedures and related cosmetic procedures. Dr. Orgill was elected “America's Top Plastic Surgeon” and has authored/co-authored 372+ papers in international journals. Prof. Luc Téot, MD, PhD, is head of the Burns Unit and Wound Healing Unit of the Montpellier University Hospital in France. He has authored 100+ publications and wrote several books and book chapters. Prof. Téot is a full professor at the universities of Montpellier, Nantes, Limoges, Antilles and La Réunion. He has organized several international conferences and served as president of the European Tissue Repair Society (1998-2000) and president of the World Union of Wound Healing Societies (2004-2008). Prof. Hiko Hyakusoku MD, PhD, is Emeritus Professor of Surgery, at the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Nippon Medical School Hospital, Tokyo, Japan. He has served as president of the Society of Japanese Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Society of 12th Japan-China Joint Meeting of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery 2003, the 1st Japanese Scar Meeting 2008, and Japanese Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He was also appointed vice president of the Nippon Medical School Hospital, Tokyo. His expertise focuses on microsurgery, extensive burn surgery, skin cancer, keloid, aesthetic surgery, cleft surgery, tissue engineering and free vascular bundle implantation. He has taught and lectured extensively, with publications exceeding 366 research works. Prof. Julian J. Pribaz was born in Trieste, Italy and raised and educated in Australia. After serving as Clinical Instructor in Plastic Surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne University, he joined Harvard Medical School in 1987 before being promoted in 2002 to Full Professor of Surgery, where he served as the plastic surgery program director for 13 years. After 29 years at Harvard, Dr. Pribaz joined the University of South Florida, where he continues to teach and perform clinical work in reconstructive surgery. With research and clinical interests primarily in general reconstructive and microvascular surgery focusing on the head and neck, breast, as well as extremity reconstruction and more recently face and hand allotransplantation, Dr. Pribaz has authored 160+ articles in peer-reviewed journals, 70+ book chapters, and served on the editorial board of five major plastic surgery journals. He has delivered 50+ keynote addresses, been a visiting professor/invited lecturer at 190+ national/international institutions and conferences, as well as course director, and given 860+ presentations nationally/internationally.
