Carl Maria von Weber is best-known as a master of Romantic opera, but he was originally a virtuoso pianist who created a substantial amount of piano music for concert use. Next to his four piano sonatas, the five large and brilliant concert pieces brought together in this book, and two final variation cycles, are certainly his most important piano solo pieces. From the early Momento capriccioso op. 12 of 1808 to the dazzling Aufforderung zum Tanz op. 65 and Polacca brillante op. 72, it is possible to trace by these technically-demanding works the composer/pianist’s development of a very mature and impressive formal compositional mastery.In the extensive preface to this thoroughly-researched Urtext edition one can read, among other things, the underlying programme that Weber came up with for the Aufforderung zum Tanz. Carl Maria von Weber est connu avant tout comme un grand maître de l’opéra romantique. Pourtant, c’était initialement un pianiste virtuose auteur d’un nombre considérable d’œuvres de concert pour son instrument. Outre les quatre sonates pour piano, la sélection présentée ici comprend cinq grandes œuvres de concert brillantes ainsi que deux de ses derniers cycles de variations qui sont certainement ses œuvres pour piano seul les plus remarquables. Du «Momento capriccioso» op. 12 composé dès 1808 jusqu’à la tumultueuse «Invitation à la danse» op. 65 et à la «Polacca brillante» op. 72, ces œuvres d’une grande exigence technique permettent de retracer l’évolution de l’écriture de ce compositeur depuis ses premières œuvres jusqu’à la plus grande maturité formelle. La préface détaillée de cette édition urtext approfondie permet notamment de découvrir le programme sous-tendant «L’invitation à la danse». Carl Maria von Weber ist vor allem als Meister der romantischen Oper bekannt. Doch war er ursprünglich ein virtuoser Pianist, der für den Konzertgebrauch ein beträchtliches Klavierwerk geschaffen hat. Neben seinen vier Klaviersonaten sind die in diesem Auswahlband zusammengestellten fünf großen, brillanten Konzertstücke und zwei letzten Variationszyklen wohl seine bedeutendsten Klavier-Solostücke. Vom frühen „Momento capriccioso“ op. 12 von 1808 bis zur fulminanten „Aufforderung zum Tanze“ op. 65 und der „Polacca brillante“ op. 72 kann man in den spieltechnisch durchweg anspruchsvollen Werken die Entwicklung des Klavierkomponisten hin zu einer sehr reifen Formbeherrschung nachvollziehen. In dem ausführlichen Vorwort der fundierten Urtextausgabe ist unter anderem das Programm nachzulesen, das Weber der „Aufforderung zum Tanz“ zugrunde gelegt haben soll.
