Herzlich Willkommen!
This book deals with prehistoric rock art (petroglyphs) from the northern fringe of the Sahara, or more precisely from the area situated between the Western Anti-Atlas, the Jebel Bani and the Wadi Draa. In the main, the historico-cultural analysis of the rock engravings that are presented, mostly for the first time, concerns problems related to their classification, context and chronology. These issues are discussed with regard to the history of civilization, as well as with reference to climatic change and to the geography and the ethnography of the mid valley of Wadi Draa. In the course of several preliminary surveys in South Morocco, the author has methodically recorded the archaeological sources that form the basis of the investigation.

Currently, Renate Heckendorf is receiving a scholarship from the Commission for the Archaeology of Non-European Cultures (Bonn), a department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI, Berlin). This enables her to study the so-called “Pseudo-Bovidien” rock art of South-Morocco, and especially the possible relationships between its artefact representations and metal finds from Europe. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Tübingen in 2005. Her research dealt with the “Bubalin” and “Bovidien” rock art of the Moroccan Pre-Sahara and was published in 2008. Renate Heckendorf has studied prehistoric archaeology, classical archaeology, philosophy (University of Hamburg) and history of art (University of Aix-en Provence). She has obtained her M.A. from the University of Hamburg. Her practical training was completed by fieldwork (survey, rescue-archaeology, protection of monuments and sites) in France, Germany, and Morocco. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD, Bonn) has awarded her several grants. She has also qualified as a translator (DipTrans IoL English/French, London). She has specialized in the translation of (academic) papers on archaeology.
