Art in the 21st Century is an award-winning series of 24 programmes in which 100 artists talk about their creations, the way they work and their individual view of art. Ai Weiwei, Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Richard Serra, Bruce Nauman, Jenny Holzer and many others open up their studios and share with us their approach to creating a work of art. The series offers insights into the entire spectrum of contemporary visual art forms from sculptures, installations and conceptual art to photography and painting. Costumes and masks, makeup and style, dolls and mannequins, stage and cinema – what strategies do we use to refashion identity? Do we seek out excess and extremes in order to see ourselves more clearly? The “Art in the Twenty First Century” documentary “Transformation” explores these questions in the work of the artists Yinka Shonibare MBE, Cindy Sherman and Paul McCarthy. ART21 ist die preisgekrönte Reihe von Dokumentationen über Kunst und Künstler des 21. Jahrhunderts. In 24 Folgen sprechen 100 zeitgenössische Künstler über ihre Werke, ihre Arbeitsweisen und ihr je eigenes Kunstverständnis. Nicht erst seit der großen Ausstellung im New Yorker Museum of Modern Arts 2012 zählt Cindy Sherman zu den wichtigen Künstlerinnen unserer Zeit. Sherman spielt in ihren berühmten Fotoserien mit der eigenen Selbstinszenierung, um die Transformierung von Identitäten zu thematisieren. Was bedeutet die eigene Identität und was ist nur eine Rolle, in die sich jeder Mensch gewollt oder zwangsläufig begibt? Neben Sherman erweitern die Performance- und Aktionskünstler Paul McCarthy und Yinka Shonibare das Spektrum dieser Fragen und präsentieren Antworten anhand ihrer Kunstwerke.
